Ich fotografiere für Kultur, Wissenschaft und Diplomatie – in Berlin, deutschlandweit und international. Seit 2006 arbeite ich als freier Fotograf; meine Arbeitsbereiche sind Portraits, Dokumentation und Kommunikationsbilder für Institutionen, Stiftungen und Unternehmen. I have worked as a freelance photographer since 2006; my fields are portraits, documentary photography and communication imagery for institutions, foundations and businesses.
Am liebsten arbeite ich mit vorhandenem Licht und vorhandenen Räumen – nah, persönlich, glaubwürdig. Genauso beherrsche ich die Standards, die Kommunikationsarbeit oft braucht, und passe mich dem jeweiligen Kontext an – backstage und auf der Bühne, im Smoking und im Dorf ohne Elektrizität, im politischen Hintergrundgespräch wie in der sensiblen Forschungsanlage, auf Berggipfeln und in schwankenden Kanus. Ich kann nahezu unsichtbar arbeiten oder Teil der Veranstaltung sein. Bei Portraits nehme ich mir Zeit. Ich kenne das Unbehagen vieler Menschen vor der Kamera und fotografiere immer für die Menschen auf den Bildern, nie gegen sie – am Ende sollen sie so wirken, wie sie sich selbst gerne sehen. Wenn es erlaubt ist, freue ich mich über einen Funken Verschmitztheit. I prefer working with available light and real surroundings – close, personal, credible. I am equally at home with the standards that communication work often requires, and I adapt to each context – backstage and on stage, in black tie and in villages without electricity, in confidential political briefings as in sensitive research facilities, on mountain summits and in swaying canoes. I can work almost invisibly or be part of the event. For portraits, I take my time. I know the unease many people feel in front of a camera, and I always photograph for the people in my pictures, never against them – in the end, they should look the way they like to see themselves. And where it is permitted, I enjoy a spark of mischief.

Seit 2010 bin ich weltweit für das Goethe-Institut im Einsatz – bislang über 250 Projekte an 24 Instituten, von Veranstaltungs- und Konferenzdokumentation über Kampagnen- und Werbematerial bis zu Vorstands- und Testimonialportraits, darunter mehrfach Einsätze in Kabul und während des Arabischen Frühlings. Seit 2008 fotografiere ich für die Botschaft von Finnland, später auch für Schweden, Norwegen, Dänemark und Island; für Finnland und Schweden habe ich Staatsbesuche als offizieller Fotograf begleitet. 2020 und 2021 habe ich die Nobelpreisverleihungen in Deutschland als offizieller Fotograf begleitet, einschließlich der Preisträgerportraits. Begonnen habe ich 2006 mit mehrjähriger Arbeit für den Kulturbereich des Auswärtigen Amts. Since 2010 I have worked worldwide for the Goethe-Institut, Germany's cultural institute – more than 250 projects at 24 institutes to date, ranging from event and conference documentation to campaign material and executive portraits, including repeated assignments in Kabul and during the Arab Spring. Since 2008 I have photographed for the Embassy of Finland in Berlin, later also for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland, and I have accompanied state visits as official photographer for Finland and Sweden. In 2020 and 2021 I served as official photographer of the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Germany, including the laureate portraits. My career began in 2006 with several years of work for the cultural section of the German Federal Foreign Office.

Eigene ProjektePersonal projects
Neben der Auftragsarbeit verfolge ich langfristige fotografische Projekte über technische Utopien, Infrastruktur sowie Mensch und Natur. Für „Der nukleare Traum", die bislang umfassendste fotografische Dokumentation der deutschen Atomlandschaft und -geschichte, habe ich über acht Jahre hinweg 60 Orte in sieben Ländern besucht; die Arbeit ist als 420-seitiger Bildband erschienen. „Metronaut", eine Dokumentation der Moskauer Metro, wurde in Berlin und Bern ausgestellt (Katalog mit einem Text von Karl Schlögel). Weitere Serien gelten dem Transrapid und der Forschung an Großgeräten. Alongside commissioned work, I pursue long-term photographic projects on technical utopias, infrastructure, people and nature. For "The Nuclear Dream", the most comprehensive photographic documentation of Germany's nuclear landscape and history to date, I visited 60 sites in seven countries over eight years; the work was published as a 420-page photo book, available in German and English. "Metronaut", a documentation of the Moscow Metro, was exhibited in Berlin and Bern, with a catalogue featuring an essay by historian Karl Schlögel. Further series are devoted to the Transrapid maglev train and large-scale research facilities.

Vor der Fotografie: Diplom in Biochemie (Universität Hannover), Stationen in IT und Industrie, berufsbegleitend ein M.Sc. in Wissenschaftsmarketing (TU Berlin). Wissenschaftliche und technische Zusammenhänge sind mir vertraut – ich verstehe in der Regel, was ich fotografiere. Before photography: a degree in biochemistry (University of Hannover), positions in IT and industry, and a master's in science marketing (TU Berlin) alongside my work. Scientific and technical subjects are familiar territory – as a rule, I understand what I photograph.
